A billing manager at a dental practice in East Brunswick, New Jersey has been sent to state prison for issuing bills to companies for dental treatment that was never carried out.

Madgy Rafla, dental office billing manager at his wife’s dental practice, was recently sentenced to three years in prison in Middlesex County. Rafla had been billing insurance companies for sums as large as forty-five thousand dollars for procedures that had never been completed. Fifty-six year old Rafla had originally agreed to pay a fine of fifty thousand dollars after he had made a guilty plea on the 7th of April to charges of second-degree healthcare claims fraud.

The period of the false claims ran between early 2004 and mid 2007, where Rafla fully admitted to falsifying the dental records of around sixty-five different patients. He then sent off these false records to numerous insurance companies in order to gain payments and reimbursements.

As part of the charges handed down by Superior Court Judge DeVesa, Rafla’s wife Gina Tanios-Rafla has agreed to a suspension of her dental license that will last for five years. She was also ordered to pay a fifty thousand dollar civil fine. All the insurance companies involved were reimbursed.
