A Lancashire-based dental practice is the first to use the latest 3D dental technology between the areas of Preston and Manchester.

Leading practitioner, Dr Ausmen Malik purchased the machine for his dental practice to help with his part-time master’s studies at the university of Lancashire. Dr Malik who is studying oral surgery has stated that the new 3D technology is an excellent resource for certain procedures such as monitoring bone density required for implant treatments.

2D imaging devices in the form of X-rays are currently used by the majority of dentists within the area and larger hospitals located in Burnley and Blackburn do not even have access to the Cone-Beam Computerised Tomography (CBCT) yet. The use of 2D imagery is fine for most dental cases but implant treatment in particular requires a more detailed imaging device.

Hospitals located in Blackburn and Burnley are referring patients who require the use of this technology to dental hospitals within Manchester. Dr Malik added that he would like to offer patients in the surrounding area a referral service of his own. He also stated that his practice can provide East Lancashire with modern and specialist treatments and can even hand out copies of the images taken to the patients.

The machine is currently installed at the Reedyford NHS Dental Practice, Nelson, which is small town in Lancashire. CBCT diagnostics scans are suitable for: checking the suitability for patients to receive dental implants, assess the need for sinus lifts and much more.
