A dental practice in Scotland was forced to cancel appointments after a swan flew into power lines causing a blackout.

Thousands of homes and businesses in Carnoustie were left without electricity after a swan flew into an electricity line. Scottish Hydro Electric confirmed that the swan had been found dead near the pylon at the Clayholes junction of the A92.

Receptionists from the Laws Dental practice had to call patients to cancel appointments after the surgery was left without electricity. Practice manager, Lynn McCreadie said that the lights flickered briefly before going out completely; some patients were in the dental chair at the time and dentists had to bring them round prematurely.

The outage also affected travel, with long distance and commuter trains delayed and cancelled in the area. The power went off just after 9 o’clock in the morning and Scottish Hydro workers restored full power by lunchtime. Heather Wallace, manager of the Sue Ryder charity shop in the town was forced to close for health and safety reasons. In total, 2700 properties were affected by the power cut.
