Dental Nurses Set to Start Work in Cumbria

Sample News Big

A group of ten dental nurses has successfully completed a training programme in protecting young teeth and preventing decay.

The nurses, who all work in NHS dental surgeries in Cumbria, were given certificates after completing the course, which hones their skills in providing preventative dental treatments, including fluoride varnish and enables them to offer oral hygiene advice. The presentation took place at the Carlisle Dental Education Centre on Tuesday night.

NHS Cumbria has been investing in preventative services to try and reduce rates of decay and improve standards of oral health. Eric Rooney, dental public health consultant for NHS Cumbria, said that it was important to help people to learn how to protect their teeth and prevent oral health diseases, as well as providing them with treatment for existing problems.

Fluoride varnish treatments and oral hygiene advice can help to protect children’s teeth and prevent decay. The procedure to apply the varnish is very quick and simple but it is usually very effective.

Children in the area will now benefit from the expertise of the nurses and hopefully standards of oral health among children in the north of Cumbria will improve in the coming years.
