A dental nurse from Darwen, Lancashire, has won a place on a specialist diploma course.

Pietro Capitelli is one of only six students to gain a place on the Combined Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Therapy at Liverpool University and he will also be the first male student at the university’s Accrington facility.

Pietro’s work and commitment have already been recognised and he was named Dental Nurse of the Year at the Training 2000 Dental Awards and branded “an inspiration” by his tutor, Pippa Seddon.

Pietro said that he was absolutely delighted to win the award and he is now looking forward to starting the diploma. He added that he loves his job and wants to encourage more men to pursue a career in dental nursing.

“People do love to comment on the fact that I’m a male dental nurse, but it doesn’t bother me. I love my job and I’d definitely recommend other men to consider it.”
