A dental nurse tutor has been named the Dental Care Professional Teacher of the Year for 2009 after being nominated by her students.

Nicky Bartholomew, who teaches at the School of Professionals Complementary to Dentistry (SPCD), beat seven finalists to win the title and £250 for herself, £1,000 for educational materials and £150-worth of Marks and Spencer vouchers.

She had no idea she was even in the running for the award until the shortlist of finalists was announced in October 2009.

On winning the title, Bartholomew said that she felt “surprised and delighted” and added that it was a great feeling to be appreciated by her pupils and her peers.

Dental Defence Union (DDU), who organizes the ceremony, gave the title to Bartholomew after she impressed them with a 15-minute presentation and QnA with judges.

Bartholomew has taught at SPCD since the school opened six years ago and is the first dental nurse tutor to bag the title.

SPCD head Sara Holmes said that Bartholomew puts everything into her teaching and deserved to win.

Rupert Hoppenbrouwers, DDU head, called her an “asset to the profession”.
