A dental nurse from Neath is preparing to swap the treatment room for the changing room, as she gets ready to make her debut for the Welsh rugby team, just 18 months after taking up the sport.

Ffion Bowen only started playing women’s rugby 18 months ago and has made rapid progress; she is now set to make her debut against Italy next month when the sides meet at Aberavon Rugby Club.

Ffion, who is from Neath, is now putting in extra hours on the pitch after she finishes work at the dental training unit of the Morgannwg Health Board and is looking forward to putting on the Welsh shirt. She currently plays for Maesteg Celtic Ladies and has also represented the Ospreys.

She only started playing rugby when her local netball team stopped playing and she decided to try her hand at a new sport; she enjoyed playing rugby and joined Maesteg Celtic; she then had a trial for the regional Ospreys team, in which she impressed enough to be selected for all three matches and was then delighted to receive the call-up to play for her country.

The match against Italy will take place on Sunday 2nd February.
