King’s College Hospital Dental has become the UK’s first Healthcare Centre of Excellence.

The dental institute was given the prestigious award in acknowledgment of the improvements, which have been achieved by installing a new track and trace barcode system, which is used to locate instruments. The system enables staff to find instruments quickly and simply by using the barcode system, which has been developed by GS1 UK provider, Meditrax.

The Meditrax system saves time for staff and will also save money in the long-run, as some of the instruments are worth thousands of pounds and must be replaced if they are misplaced for a long period of time. The system also logs sterilisation processes, which makes the decontamination procedure much more efficient and eliminates the chance of a professional using a contaminated instrument.

The Meditrax system has been installed at the dental institute to increase efficiency; GS1 UK found that approximately 26 days each year per nurse and one million pounds of nurses’ collective wages were lost to searching for missing or misplaced instruments.

Davisha Humzah, acting operations manager at King’s College Hospital Dental said that staff were delighted with the award and are really pleased with the positive changes that have been brought about by the introduction of the Meditrax system.
