Boffins from Sweden have warned that dental implants could result in bone loss and are urging people to get checked

Dental surgeon Christer Fransson and his team from the University of Gothenburg discovered that 28 per cent of patients suffer from some form of bone loss in the area surrounding the dental implants.

The researchers analysed X-rays from 600 patients and found that the titanium artificial roots had caused bone loss in some cases.

Dr Fransson said that the loss accelerated with time and said that his study was important as it highlighted the need for early treatment of bone loss.

According to the study smokers are at higher risk than non-smokers.
