Dental hygienist helps South African kids

A dental hygienist from Salisbury has been working hard to provide more than 400 South African children with free dental care.

Susan Callaway, 57, of Delmarva Dental Services, has spent the last month travelling around South Africa treating people and learning about the accessibility of its oral health care system.

Selected as one of 35 US nationals to visit South Africa on this special mission, Ms Callaway is part of the People to People scheme and the Dental Hygiene Delegation, which was partly funded by contributions from the Blades United Methodist Church and employees from Delmarva Dental.

After visiting the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, and the University of Witwaterand, Johannesburg, where she discussed good practice knowledge with her South African counterparts, Ms Callaway said that it was tough finding dental hygienists in South Africa because of low wages.

During her visit Ms Callaway also visited an orphanage, a clinic for abused and terminally ill children, a child health and nutrition project and a dental clinic, where they gave free dental care to kids.

She and her colleagues took 10,000 toothbrushes, as well as floss, toothpaste, mouth mirrors and educations supplies to hand out on their trip.
