A new Dental Hygiene Programme at Hiwassee College has been given the green light by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

The brand new course will be the first of its kind in Monroe County and will undoubtedly benefit local people in East Tennessee in the future; dental hygienists are becoming an increasingly popular and important part of the team in dental practices across the USA and directors at the college are keen to channel young people into an area of employment where jobs are available, especially in light of the recession and subsequent high rates of unemployment.

The college can now begin accepting applications and students can start the course this autumn. Interim President of the college, Jerry Russell, said that this opportunity was extremely exciting and the college was proud to be offering the new Dental Hygiene Program. The college is aiming to target people who are keen to pursue a new career path and master new skills, as well as those who have had a long-term desire to go into the dental industry. Mr Russell said that the new course may attract those who have recently lost their jobs.

The new dental hygiene course will help to address the shortage of dental professionals in the East Tennessee area; many of the students will stay in the area once they have completed the course and this will help to boost oral hygiene in the region.
