A dental hygiene expert has shared a list top tips to boost oral health.

Amanda Sheehan, education and clinical support specialist for TePe, a leading provider of oral cleaning products, explained that patients should go beyond brushing twice a day to optimise dental health.

Interdental cleaning is one of the most important elements of daily cleaning, Ms Sheehan explained. Brushing only cleans 60% of the mouth. Interdental cleaning is designed to remove debris and bacteria from the cracks and crevices between the teeth. It’s also beneficial to use a tongue cleaner after brushing.

Another essential tip is to break the habit of rinsing after brushing. Most people are taught to brush and then rinse and spit when they’re young. Rinsing removes fluoride from the tooth surface, meaning that it can’t fulfil its protective role. Instead of rinsing after brushing, dental experts recommend brushing then spitting.

Exposure to acid is a major risk for dental health. Ms Sheehan encourages patients to moderate their intake of sugary and acidic foods and drinks to protect the tooth enamel and reduce the risk of decay and acid erosion. Once the enamel is weak, it cannot regenerate and the risk of cavities and sensitivity increases.

To keep the teeth in pristine condition, Ms Sheehan also recommends trying to manage stress. Stress can cause some people to grind their teeth at night, which can damage the teeth and cause headaches and pain and stiffness in the jaw. For those who grind or clench their teeth regularly, it’s important to see a dentist. Dental professionals may recommend using a bite guard to protect the teeth.
