Dental Health Week launches in Australia

Dental Health Week has kicked off in Australia and dental organisations across the country are preparing a series of events and activities with the aim of improving standards of oral health.  Dental practices across the country are intending to encourage both children and adults to take better care of their teeth and gums.

The Mid-North Coast Local Health District is taking the opportunity to talk to children and adults throughout the week to try and raise awareness of the importance of good oral health. During the week, members of the health board will be visiting a host of primary schools to inform children about oral hygiene and to educate parents about the importance of brushing and regular dental visits.

Dr Poonam Nagrani said that the theme of this year’s campaign, ‘Let’s Stop the Rot’ provides the public and dental professionals with a challenge to act quickly to stop oral diseases. Common oral problems include gum disease and dental decay, which are becoming more prevalent in Australia.

According to the Australian Dental Association, 50 percent of Australian children will suffer from tooth decay by the time they reach the age of six years old. Dr Nagrani described the figures as “alarming” and said that urgent action was required.

General dental care is free of charge for children, yet many of them are not visiting their dentist as often as they should. Dentists and health experts are eager to encourage parents to take advantage of the care available to children. Diet is also a major cause of the increasing rates of decay. Therefore, dentists are keen for parents to reduce the amount of sweets and fizzy drinks they are allowing their children to consume.
