Dental graduates much more likely to find employment

Figures have suggested that medicine and dentistry graduates are much more likely to find employment than graduates of other university courses.

According to statistics released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency, around 1 in 10 graduates was struggling to find a job in the first six months after they completed their course, with those studying computer science and communication and media studies with the highest rate of unemployment. There has been a significant increase in the number of unemployed graduates since 2007-2008 and figures now suggest almost twenty thousand graduates are out of work.

In contrast to the worrying statistics relating to many disciplines, the figures relating to students pursuing careers in medicine and dentistry were very positive, with almost every graduate finding a job within six months of the course coming to an end.

Unsurprisingly, both dentistry and medicine are becoming increasingly popular and competition for places is fierce; students are attracted by the promise of a job as soon as the graduate and are keen to pursue a career which offers job security, especially in the current economic climate. Salaries for careers in medicine and dentistry are also considerably higher than many other jobs, with the average graduate salary reported to be around £20,000.

The figures released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency will be alarming for both students and government ministers; with students amassing increasingly large debts, opportunities for work are becoming scarcer and many young people are struggling to keep up with payments and get onto the property ladder.
