Dental experts have shared some simple tips to help the public boost oral health, as many struggle to access routine dental services.

Most dental conditions are preventable and making small changes to brushing habits, diet and lifestyle choices can make a big difference.

Dr Mervyn Druian, from the London Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry, urged those who usually brush straight after breakfast to switch to cleaning their teeth before eating. Brushing after eating can cause a build-up of acids, which soften the enamel. Brushing while the enamel is soft can increase the risk of erosion and sensitivity.

It is particularly important to avoid brushing straight after eating or drinking acidic and sugary food or drinks, such as fruit juices and lemon water.

Another tip is to avoid rinsing after brushing. Many people automatically rinse the mouth after cleaning their teeth. Cutting out this step can help to protect the enamel by prolonging exposure to fluoride, a protective mineral added to toothpaste.

Dr Druian also recommends chewing sugar-free gum during the day but encourages patients to discard their gum after a maximum of 20 minutes. Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, which cleanses the mouth and neutralises acids. Chewing for longer than 20 minutes can increase pressure on the jaw and cause pain.

Dental hygienist, Bernita Shelley, suggests eating raw celery to clean the mouth and increase saliva production. Celery is a good source of malic acid, which promotes healthy saliva production, and it is also sugar-free. Celery also contains fibre for healthy digestion and it is rich in vitamins A, C and K.
