Dental Experts Raising Awareness of Fluoride Varnish in North Staffordshire

Sample News Big

Dental experts are raising awareness of preventative dental treatments by visiting supermarkets in North Staffordshire as part of National Smile Month.

Experts from the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Partnership Trust are to visit Asda in Wolstanton and Tesco in Hanley to talk to people about fluoride varnish treatment – a service which can help to reduce the risk of tooth decay.

The team will be visiting areas which have high rates of decay among young children to talk to parents about fluoride varnish, a simple and quick treatment that helps to strengthen teeth and make them more resistant to decay.

Jill Allbutt, health improvement practitioner in oral health at the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Partnership Trust, said that National Smile Month is a great chance to raise understanding of preventative treatments.

Fluoride varnish treatment involves painting fluoride varnish onto the teeth. The procedure, which is generally used for young children, lasts just a few minutes and involves absolutely no pain.

National Smile Month is an annual campaign organised by the British Dental Health Foundation and events will run until June 20th.

Fluoride varnish has never been tested for safety. It contains a hugely toxic 22,600 ppm fluoride some of which gets into the bloodstream by absorption. Also chipping of the varnish must cause some fluoride to be swallowed.
