As the Easter weekend looms and shoppers start to fill their trollies with sweet treats, dental experts have published a list of the worst-offending Easter eggs.

A study commissioned by Expressdentist.com found that Galaxy’s Ripple and Minstrels eggs contain the most sugar per 100g serving. Both eggs contain 68g of sugar per 100g. The top 10 list also include Nestle’s Smarties Easter Egg (65.3g), M&M’s Salted Caramel Egg (65g), Smarties Orange Egg (64.9g), White Chocolate Twix (62g), Creme Egg (61.5g), Terry’s Chocolate Orange (white chocolate 61g), Aero Mint (60.75g) and Nestle’s Rolo Egg (60.5g).

The Easter eggs with the lowest sugar content were Green & Blacks Dark Chocolate Egg (29g), Ferrero Collection Egg (39.9g) and Lindt Salted Caramel Egg (42g).

Easter is traditionally a time for treating the taste buds and indulging in edible delights, but dentists are keen to highlight the potential risks of eating sugar-laden foods.

To reduce risks, dental experts recommend moderating daily intake of sugary foods and avoiding snacking between meals. Eating between main meals can cause acid erosion, as the bacteria in the mouth release acids when they feed.

The enamel can only withstand a limited number of acid attacks per day. Avoiding grazing protects the teeth against cavities and sensitivity. Dentists also recommend waiting at least 45-60 minutes after eating to clean the teeth to prevent enamel wear.
