A dental duo is celebrating running a Swadlincote dental practice for 20 years.

Laura Barr and John Hume-Spry opened Delph Dental Practice in 2002 after realising that there was a huge demand for treatment in the South Derbyshire town. The pair explained that they had their hearts “set on Swad” from the outset and they are thrilled to be celebrating an incredible milestone two decades on.

John, who is originally from Nottingham, has spent his entire career working in Derbyshire and he and Laura both trained for a year in the area after graduating. It took the pair a year to get the practice up and running. Initially, there were many challenges due to the demand for treatment and the sheer number of patients that needed appointments.

When the practice first opened, the team comprised just five members, but it soon grew and there are now 15 members of staff. Patient numbers have increased and the practice is an integral part of the local community. The team takes great pride in getting to know patients and building relationships and the practice also supports good causes and community projects through fundraising events.

The team has recently been awarded an Investors in People award, which John said was a “privilege” and recognised the “dedication and hard work the team has invested in the business.” There have been difficulties to navigate and negotiate in the last 20 years, including the pandemic, but John and Laura are “very optimistic” about the future.
