Dental Council launches New Information Leaflets

The Dental Council of Ireland has launched new information leaflets for dental patients.

The guidance brochure has been launched to help dental patients choose a dentist and contains information about dentists in Ireland and visiting other countries for dental treatment. This is the first time that the council has produced information, which is primarily targeted at patients.

The Dental Council has also recently introduced a mandate, which requires all dentists in Ireland to display their fees; this will come into play from the 1st June. Under the new mandate, all dentists must display their fees in a clear, visible space so that patients can see the cost of treatment before they go into a consultation. Some procedures must have a fixed price and dentists are obliged to display the range of fees for a treatment where this is applicable.

Dr Eamon Croke, from the Dental Council of Ireland, said that the new measures will enable patients to determine the cost of their treatment before they go into the treatment room. Fees for certain treatments, including X-rays, examinations, root canal treatment, crowns and both routine and surgical tooth extractions must be displayed clearly in all dental surgeries.

The Dental Council is hoping that the information guide and the new fee mandate will benefit patients and enable them to become more involved in their dental care. Many patients are now considering going abroad for treatment and the guide will help them to choose wisely, as going abroad does carry risks, especially if patients go without researching the treatment they are having and the clinic they are visiting very carefully in advance.
