A dental clinic has opened at the Qibbah Prison in Tripoli, Lebanon. The director of The Restart Center for rehabilitating victims of violence and abuse, Suzanne Jabbour, opened the clinic on Wednesday and addressed the crowd stating the rights of inmates and calling for better provision for prisoner’s needs.

The Restart Center started working with the prison around eight years ago in conjunction with the Directorate General of the Internal Security Forces; the programme is being funded by a Swiss firm.

In addition to the dental clinic, a new sewing room was also opened as part of rehabilitation plans for inmates. The sewing workshop will be used to manufacture new uniforms for the ISF and profits will be given to the inmates to allow them to learn about the benefit of earning money.

During her visit to the prison, Jabbour said that it was essential for prisons to be suitable for human use and called for a “system of transparency” inside prisons so that they can become centres of rehabilitation and growth, rather than punishment.

The dental clinic will enable inmates to access a wide range of services on-site and encourage them to have regular oral health checks, which will reduce the risk of oral diseases.
