The Oral Health Foundation is promoting good oral health for all during National Smile Month.

National Smile Month is an annual campaign, which raises awareness of the importance of looking after the teeth and gums. Run by the foundation, the campaign encourages everyone to take good care of their mouths and understand the value of a healthy smile.

This year’s theme is ‘Everybody deserves a healthy smile’ and the charity is aiming to spread four key messages. The primary aims are to promote twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, to encourage cleaning between the teeth, to urge people to moderate their intake of sugary foods and drinks and to attend regular dental check-ups. These simple steps can help to prevent decay and gum disease and keep the teeth and gums in check.

As part of National Smile Month, dental practices and community dental teams up and down the country will be backing the campaign and taking part in activities to spread the word. Dental health issues are common, but many cases of gum disease and decay can be prevented with good oral hygiene, frequent dental visits and a healthy, balanced diet.
National Smile Month runs from May 16th to June 16th. This year’s campaign has been launched in partnership with Align, Listerine, Oral B, Wrigley’s Oral Health Programme and GSK.

During National Smile Month, dental teams, dental charities and public health experts are urging people to think about their mouths and take positive steps to protect their teeth and gums. At a time when it is difficult to get appointments with NHS dentists, it is particularly important to adopt healthy habits in a bid to reduce the risk of gum disease and decay. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth using floss or interdental brushes and limiting sugar consumption can help to keep dental disease at bay.
