Dental care scheme expands

A West Virginia-based free dental care scheme will be expanding in 2010.

The Children with Healthy Oral Cavities Morgantown Program, aka CHOMP, curently see pupils from Mylan Park Elementary School get free treatment from students from West Virginia University’s School of Dentistry.

As part of the scheme, groups of youngsters were being taken to the pediatirc clinic at the university twice a month for oral examinations.

But thanks to the expansion the CHOMP scheme will take groups of pupils for a check-up once a week.

Dr Eliot Shulman, CHOMP dentist, said that the program was going really well and claimed that the response rate from both parents and kids had been excellent.

He added that he would like to the scheme rolled out in other local schools.

CHOMP was developed with the help of Monongalia County Board of Education.

Fully qualified physicians supervise the dental students from West Virginia Uni while they carry out examinations.
