A report has highlighted dental care as a cause for concern at Edmunds Hill Prison near Bury St Edmunds.

The report, which was carried out by the Independent Monitoring Board, revealed that there was a long wait for dental care, with some prisoners waiting several weeks to see a dentist. The Board claims that more needs to be done to improve access to dental services for prisoners and believes that pressure should be applied to the local NHS trust. The report covers the whole of 2010 and is the last report that will be carried out at the prison before it merges with nearby Highpoint Prison.

The report also raised concerns about the standard of meals at the prison; the report claims that the food is nutritious but people who have special diets are receiving the same meals over and over again and this is unsatisfactory.

The report also states that budget cuts and staffing cuts have affected offender management.

A spokesperson for the Prison Service said that the report will be considered very carefully by ministers and the necessary changes will be made to make the prison more effective and efficient.
