Delta Dental launches campaign to improve oral health in older people

Sample News Big

The Delta Dental Foundation of New Jersey has announced that it will launch a campaign to improve standards of oral health amongst seniors.

Representatives from the foundation have recorded video and audio messages, which will be played on television channels and radio stations to educate older people about the importance of good oral health.

Older people are at high risk of developing oral health problems and numerous studies have linked poor oral health to poor general health. Research has established a firm link between poor oral health and health conditions including strokes, heart disease and diabetes. Seniors are more likely to suffer from dry mouth, root decay, tooth decay, gum recession, thrush and inflammation in the mouth.

The Delta Dental Foundation of New Jersey is launching the campaign to raise awareness of oral health and educate people about caring for their teeth and looking out for symptoms and signs of oral health problems. Dentists are also keen to encourage patients to attend regular check-ups; frequent dental examinations enable dentists to keep an eye on developing conditions and identify early warning signs of serious conditions including oral cancer and gum disease.

The public announcements will urge older people to brush their teeth twice a day, avoid smoking, use dental floss and visit their dentist on a regular basis. For older people who are experiencing troubles caring for their teeth as a result of health issues, such as arthritis, dentists recommend using electric toothbrushes or visiting a dentist to discuss possible options to make oral hygiene more accessible.
