Daily Mail Research Suggests Whitening Toothpaste A Waste Of Money

Investigations carried out by the Daily Mail have revealed that whitening toothpaste is a waste of money.

Members of staff at the paper decided to trial a number of whitening toothpaste products to see if they made a difference to the shade of the teeth, following the news that whitening toothpaste sales have soared since 2008. There was a 15 per cent increase in sales between 2008 and 2009 and the trend has continued since.

The Daily Mail tested six of the most popular whitening products; the trial was carried out by Dr Joe Oliver at London’s Welbeck Clinic. The trial involved a group of women and the shade of their teeth was tested and they then used a specific toothpaste for one month and the shade was then tested again.

The results of the study were shocking for all the wrong reasons; whitening toothpaste is often much more expensive than standard versions, but the results of the study showed very little improvement in every single case. Dr Oliver used a professional colour chart and none of the toothpastes used in the trial achieved a degree of colour change, which was significant enough to change the shade of the teeth on the scale.

In light of the study, which suggests that buying whitening toothpaste is a waste of money, Dr Oliver advised patients who want whiter teeth to have professional whitening treatment at a dental clinic.
