Coventry Doctors Planning to Open Dental Surgery

A group of Coventry doctors have stopped advertising as local NHS dentists, as they are planning to open their own dental surgery.

Doctors from Cheylesmore Surgery have set up a petition to campaign for permission to open a new dental surgery, which has already gathered 1,400 signatures and has now been submitted to the city council.

A city councillor said that he was disappointed that the doctors have stopped advertising local dental services and suggested that they should put the needs of patients first and make information about NHS dental care more accessible.

Doctors from the surgery have put together plans to open a new dental surgery but a senior official from NHS Coventry has criticised the doctors for failing to provide information about NHS dental services. According to Kerrie Woods, commissioning manager at NHS Coventry, the surgery has stopped stocking leaflets and posters advertising NHS dental care and the trust has had to place brochures in the local library and community centre.

David Spurgeon, a member of Coventry city council’s health board and patient group, Coventry LINK, said that if the official’s comments were true, the doctors’ behaviour was “disgraceful.”

Cheylesmore Surgery was formed when two practices joined together and is located within Quinton Park, which is also home to a number of other NHS services. Now bosses at the health centre want to add a dental surgery, despite a local NHS practice advertising dental places. The group has now put pressure on the council to approve the plans by launching a petition.
