Could A New Balloon Device Replace Traditional Braces?

Sample News Big

A new type of gum shield, which contains a vibrating balloon, has been hailed as a possible replacement for traditional braces.

The Aerodentis device is worn at night. The gum shield is connected to a small computerised machine, which pumps air into the balloon, applying pressure to the teeth. The balloon is made from silicone and it is designed to sit on the teeth while the patient is asleep.

The machine controls air flow into and out of the balloon and it expands and contracts several times per minute as the patient sleeps. The vibrations generated by the machine cause the teeth to move, pulling them in line with the custom-made gum shield. The device has been developed based on the theory that applying gentle vibrations moves the teeth faster than sustained pressure.

Patients wear the Aerodentis during the night for between 8 and 10 hours, which will undoubtedly be appealing for those who are reluctant to have treatment because they don’t want to be seen wearing an unsightly brace. The manufacturers believe that treatment times will be as short as three months.

Around one million people in the UK have orthodontic treatment each year and most opt for fixed metal braces, which can be uncomfortable. Average treatment time is around 12 months and fixed braces are highly visible. This new treatment offers a discreet alternative, which allows patients to continue on with their normal day to day routine without worrying about their looks or the impact their brace will have on their speech, oral health or their ability to enjoy food.

The Aerodentis has already received approval for use in Europe and is expected to be available to UK patients within the next 12 months.
