Cornwall woman launches fund for emergency dental care after losing most of her teeth

A woman from Cornwall has launched an urgent appeal to fund private dental treatment after losing most of her teeth.

Cara Smith is appealing to the public to donate £2,000 to pay for emergency dental treatment. She needs to raise the money to see a private dentist because the waiting list for NHS care is too long. Cara, 43, has been waiting for treatment since 2018.

Cara suffers from extensive dental health issues, which have been caused or exacerbated by heavy smoking and drinking up to 2 litres of fizzy pop every day. She also has a fear of going to the dentist, which meant that she didn’t go for years at a time.

Cara has experienced severe pain for several years, she can’t eat and she avoids going out because she is so ashamed of her teeth. In 2018, she plucked up the courage to call her dentist, but was informed that the wait for treatment could be 18 months. Since that call, she has chased the surgery for an appointment, but has not been able to get one and there is no sign of the situation changing.

Since March 2020, Cara has been surviving on supplement shakes because she can’t even eat soft foods. She can’t afford to pay to see a private dentist and has launched a crowdfunding page to try to raise £2,000. She is hoping to have the few remaining natural teeth she has left extracted and new dentures fitted.
