An Irish dentist has been honoured for going above and beyond her normal duties to help a pregnant woman with toothache.

Dr Freda Guiney, who practices in Classes Lake, Ballincollig, received a national award for sensitivity from the Journal of the Irish Dental Association for helping during a late night emergency.

Her patients Mary and Ciaran Cunningham nominated her for the award after Dr Guiney treating Mary, who was experiencing excruciating dental pain and 39-weeks pregnant.

Mary and Ciaran had already visited the maternity hospital but were told nothing could be done. When Mary’s pain didn’t subside Ciaran took his wife Dr Guiney’s house where they were welcomed warmly.

Dr Guiney x-rayed Mary and administered painkillers that would not affect her pregnancy.

She also faxed a prescription to a late night pharmacy and checked to see if Mary was improving over the next few days.

Dr Barry Harrington, award judge, said that Dr Guiney had displayed “immense courage” and a huge amount of professional ability.

Dr Guiney said she felt honoured to have won the award but claimed that any dentist would do what she had.

Mary, Ciaran and their new baby boy won a €5,000 Florida holiday to for nominating their favourite dentist.
