Cooper, a male Californian sea lion from Taronga Zoo, is all smiles after undergoing dental treatment.

The 5 year old sea lion can now eat normally and he has returned to his normal diet after undergoing dental treatment in February. One of Cooper’s supervisors, Danielle Fox, said that Cooper has been suffering ongoing dental problems since he arrived from a German zoo in 2009 and he has had a series of treatments, including root canal therapy and 2 extractions.

Cooper’s latest dental session was needed to treat an infection; vets made an incision in the floor of the sea lion’s mouth to treat the infection and he has recovered well, returning to his normal eating routine. During his recovery, keepers fed Cooper smaller meals and treats including pilchards, whiting and squid, which are easy to swallow.

Following his treatment, Ms Fox said that Cooper is a lot happier and more confident and he has gained quite a lot of weight.

Cooper is one of Taronga Zoo’s most popular residents and everyone is glad to see him back on top form.
