Work on a new state of the art dental unit in Antrim has begun.

Construction work, which is being overseen by contractors, Mascott Construction Ltd, is underway at the site of the Hospital Dentistry Department, which will be part of the Antrim Area Hospital. The dental unit is located at the front of the site and will cost in the region of £1.2 million.

The new unit will house Special Care Dentistry, Orthodontics and Oral and Maxillofacial Care, bringing the specialist areas together under the same roof for the first time. There will be four orthodontic dental chairs and two treatment rooms dedicated to special care dentistry. The move will enable patients who need complex treatment to benefit from better continuous care and enable multi-skilled teams to work together more cohesively.

The new unit is expected to be completed in January next year and the services currently based at Braid Valley Hospital will relocate shortly after, with the hospital expected to be open to patients by the beginning of March 2015.

Assistant Director of Acute Services at the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, Rebecca Getty, described the unit as “much needed” and added that the opening would improve patient care significantly.
