Congressman sues after dental damage

An American congressman is suing a House of Representatives cafeteria after he suffered dental damage after eating a sandwich containing an olive pit.

Dennis Kucinich, the Democrat representative for Cleveland, Ohio, suffered extensive dental damage after he unwittingly bit down on an olive pit; he has now filed a lawsuit against the company that runs the cafeteria in the Longworth House Office Building.

Mr Kucinich bought the sandwich in April 2008 and has experienced severe pain since; he has sustained permanent oral injuries and has undergone a series of dental and surgical procedures. He claims that the sandwich was unfit for human consumption and said that it presented dangers to consumers because it was impossible to tell that the olives were pitted.

The congressman believes that he is entitled to compensation for his suffering over the last three years, as well as damages for future dental work. His attorney, Andrew R Young made no further comment, stating that the matter was “private.”

Mr Kucinich’s case is likely to infuriate many people, especially in light of comments made by President Obama yesterday, urging people to live within their means and tighten their belts following the global recession. Some may think that the congressman’s case is frivolous, especially considering his relatively high salary of $174,000.

The company that manages the restaurant has received the lawsuit but representatives have not yet been able to comment on the matter; Vice President of the Compass Group, Cheryl Queen said that they will review the lawsuit. A hearing will be held on the 8th April.
