Columbia Basin Dentist promotes good oral health for pregnant women

Sample News Big

A dentist from Columbia Basin is introducing measures to promote good oral health amongst pregnant women.

Dr Alvin Thien, Columbia Basin Health Association clinics director, is focusing on pregnant women, as dental health is extremely important during pregnancy and many pregnant women avoid going to the dentist. Pregnancy increases the risk of gum disease and other dental health issues and studies have shown a link between poor oral health during pregnancy and complications during pregnancy and labour; there is an increased risk of premature birth and some cases of stillbirth have been linked to poor oral health.

Dr Thien said that the CBHA is working with the Washington State Collaborative Oral Health Improvement Plan; the aim of the scheme is to encourage pregnant women to attend regular appointments during their pregnancy. Regular check-ups will enable dentists to treat any developing conditions early and prevent the development of serious dental health conditions. All pregnant women are advised to visit their dentist during the early stages of their pregnancy and it is beneficial to attend another examination towards the end of the pregnancy.
