England’s chief dental officer, Sara Hurley, will officially open a new dental training facility in Colchester next week, it has been confirmed.

Ms Hurley will visit the University of Essex on Tuesday 26th April to open the new academic clinic, which is located at Bromley Road Dental Surgery. The facility is already up and running, but Ms Hurley will be cutting the ribbon to declare it officially open.

The centre is already in use by students studying for MSc qualifications in periodontology and advanced periodontic treatment. At present, there are six surgeries in action and there are plans to open laboratories to enable students to hone their dental skills by the time summer arrives.

The opening of the new training facility, which is designed to enable qualified dentists to further their learning, is part of the university’s commitment to expanding oral health services and training. The university already boasts the country’s largest dental therapy and hygiene programme.

Currently, the facility is the only non-hospital setting for periodontal students to hone their practical skills in England. At the Bromley Road base, students and dentists have access to patients in a day to day general dentistry setting and this gives them experience of everyday dentistry and what they can expect from the world of work if they choose to base themselves in a general surgery rather than a hospital.

Professor Phil Cannell, from the university, said that it is exciting to see the interest the new facility has generated within the dental community.
