Cockcroft calls for dentist input on reform

The chief dental officer for England has called on NHS dentists to let it be known if they have interest in piloting industry reform ideas.

Dr Barry Cockcroft said that he wants to hear from dentists that are keen to see recommendations made by Steele Review 2009 implemented.

The review, compiled by Prof Jimmy Steele, proposed a number of reforms that are designed to rejuvenate NHS dentistry– including the likes of linking dentists’ income with the amount of NHS patients they treat and their levels of activity.

Two waves of reform trials are set to take place.  The first will look at the way that dental technology is being used and will tweak patient assessments. The second will affect contracts which will blend access, quality and activity indicators.

The first wave is expected to begin soon and the second will begin in September and could run for two years.

Dr Cockcroft said that local PCTS and dentists should let the Steele panel know if they are interested in taking part in the pilot schemes and that these changes were hopefully going to significantly benefit NHS dental patients.

Ann Keen, health minister, admitted that access to NHS dentistry had increased but said that the Steele Review’s implementation panel would be bringing about much needed improvements.
