BBC Sport presenter, Clare Balding has issued a light-hearted apology to a girl she tackled forcefully during a school lacrosse game. The incident left the opponent requiring dental treatment.

Balding was at Downe House at the time and during a particularly ferocious match against High Wycombe, admitted that she took the mantra “attack is the best form of defence” too far, leaving her opponent needing dental work.

Balding spoke of the incident in a candid interview with Country Life magazine and said that the match, which was against Wycombe Abbey, was especially spicy due to the fact that the Downe House headmistress had recently arrived from the rival school.

Balding, who is the daughter of horse trainer, Ian Balding, apologised to the girl and her parents, who were forced to foot the bill for her dental treatment. She joked that there was always added spice in the games against Wycombe Abbey, as the headmistress was desperate to beat her former school.
