Chief dental officer Cockcroft receives CBE

The English chief dental officer has been handed a New Year Honour in 2010.

Barry Cockcroft received a CBE for his contribution to dentistry and public health in Britain.

Prior to joining the Department of Health, Dr Cockcroft, who has been the chief dental officer since June 2006, worked as a NHS general practitioner for 27 years.

He is best known for his attempts to tackle the nation’s low access to NHS dentistry.

After commissioning the Steel Report, an independent review of NHS dentistry, Dr Cockcroft has worked on behalf of the government to carry out the recommendations of the report.
