Chester Dental Surgeon Answers Charity Pleas for Help in Greece

A dental surgeon has travelled from Chester to Greece after responding to please for help from the charity Dentaid.

Donna Jackson decided to offer her skills and expertise after seeing an advert for volunteer work, which was placed by Dentaid. Dentaid is an international charity that strives to provide dental care to some of the world’s poorest and most underprivileged people. The charity is currently working on helping those affected by the refugee crisis in Syria, providing much-needed dental supplies and basic care to refugees living in Northern Greece.

During her time in Greece, Donna has been writing a blog that documents her experiences. She has seen hundreds of patients in a very different environment to the one she is used to back at home in the UK. Dental issues are common, but there is evidence of dental work carried out in the past. Some patients, she said, had crowns and fillings, that underline the difference people are facing from days gone by to the present day. In the past, many would have enjoyed a prosperous life, but they now find themselves faced with a daily battle for survival far away from home.

Donna paid for her flights and was only allowed to take hand luggage to make room for dental supplies. She also had to go through rigorous military and bureaucratic processes before she was allowed to travel, due to restrictions in the refugee camps.

Donna is due to arrive home in October and is looking forward to joining fellow members of the City of Chester Band to prepare for a competition at the end of the month.
