The General Dental Council has warned members of the public that making use of cheap whitening offers may actually cost more in the long-run; experts advised people to steer clear of discounts and cheap treatments available at beauty salons and shopping centres, as bodged treatment is a lot more expensive to correct than the price of whitening treatment at a dental clinic.

Dentists are warning people to avoid being lured in by cheap prices and big discounts, as whitening treatment carries risks and patients may be left with permanent damage.

The General Dental Council warned that beauticians and other practitioners are offering treatment after just a few days of training and they do not have the relevant dental expertise to be offering dental services. Dentists say that they have seen cases where patients have been left with burnt gums, singed lips and bleeding gums after whitening treatment and urge people to see a qualified dentist if they want to have whitening treatment.

The GDC claims that tooth whitening is a dental treatment and should therefore only be provided by trained dentists who have the relevant qualifications and the training to react in the event of complications arising.

Experts cited a recent case where a London-based firm called Perfect Whites was taken to the High Court and found guilty of practising dentistry unlawfully.
