Charities are appealing for donations of hygiene and dental products, as the cost of living crisis impacts young people.

More and more people aged between 18 and 25 are contacting charities for support and advice amid rising prices and ongoing uncertainty caused by the pandemic.

A survey conducted by Be Kind Direct suggests that young people across the UK are experiencing anxiety, depression and low self-esteem as a result of their financial situation. The poll, which involved 320 organisations, suggested that many young people are making a choice between buying food and hygiene products because they can’t afford both.

Be Kind Direct has appealed to companies and manufacturers to support schemes and provide donations to help young people who can’t afford the basics, such as sanitary products, shower gel and toothpaste.

One organisation that has come forward to support the initiative is YMCA Wellington, which works with young people in Telford. The charity is collecting and distributing hygiene and dental products to not only improve health and hygiene, but also to build confidence and self-esteem. Having access to essentials is not just about keeping clean. It’s also important for self-worth and dignity, staff at the charity say.

Chief executive of Be Kind Direct, Rosanne Gray, said that the mission is to help those who experience “hygiene poverty” and “open up opportunities for thousands of young people in the UK.” The charity is working with businesses, organisations and charities across the country to collect products, which will be passed “into the hands of people who need them.”
