Charges for dental X-rays could be introduced in Guernsey

Patients who are referred to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey for a dental X-ray may have to start paying for their treatment, it has been announced.

The Health and Social Services Department has appealed to the States to change a law, which restricts the power of the department and prohibits them from changing fees. At the moment, patients who are registered with a dentist that does not have an X-ray machine can receive dental X-rays at the hospital free of charge; however, this may soon change and a fee of £50 may be introduced.

The Health and Social Services Department says the current system may put dentists off buying the equipment and added that the new fee would raise £40,000 per year.

Dental X-rays will continue to be free for children who are referred through the Children’s Dental Service but charges will be made for patients who are referred through the private system.

A decision will be made by the States next month.
