Change4Life Adverts Highlight Mouth Cancer Risk

The government’s Change 4 Life campaign, which encourages people to live a healthier lifestyle in order to reduce their risk of medical conditions, is warning people against the dangers of drinking too much alcohol.

In recent weeks, figures have emerged highlighting the number of people who are drinking too much, with many of those unaware that they regularly consume more than the weekly recommended intake. Women are drinking more than ever before and this does not just those who like to go out at the weekends; a high proportion of women consume more than the daily recommended amount by going for a drink after work everyday or having a couple of drinks with their evening meal.

The Change4Life advert, which is currently being broadcast on a number of channels, highlights the risks of drinking alcohol and warns the public against an increased risk of liver disease, high blood pressure and mouth cancer.

According to experts, drinking just 2 pints of strong beer or 2 large glasses of wine on a regular basis increases the risk of developing oral cancer by three times.

Oral cancer has become increasingly prevalent in the last decade and the trend is set to continue over the course of the next decade; unlike other forms of cancer, mouth cancer is being diagnosed in more young people and survival rates have shown little sign of improvement. Alcohol is one of the main risk factors for the disease, along with smoking and exposure to the human papillomacvirus (HPV), which is spread through sexual contact.

The Change4Life campaign, which was launched last year, encourages people to cut down on drinking by having alcohol-free days, drinking in moderation, using smaller glasses and swapping alcoholic drinks for non-alcoholic drinks or drinks that contain a smaller percentage of alcohol.
