A number of celebrities joined forces for the Los Angeles Mission on Good Friday.

Thousands of people gathered on the streets of downtown Los Angeles on Friday for the annual event, which is designed to help the homeless people of Skid Row. During the day, celebrities joined volunteers to provide people with a cooked meal, a foot massage and a brand new pair of trainers donated by Etnies. Children at the event also received an Easter basket, which was filled with toys and sweets.

The Los Angeles mission has been working to help homeless people in the area for 75 years; the charity provides food and shelter as well as medical and dental services. For homeless people, there is no means of paying for medical or dental care; they cannot afford the fees or the cost of insurance and therefore many would go without the care they need for months, even years, without the help of the charity.

Celebrities helping out at the event included Hilary and Haylie Duff, Stephanie Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

The work of the mission has become increasingly important as a large number of people have been hit by the recession; the aim of the charity is not just to provide them with food and medical and dental care, but also to try and give them the confidence and chances to get on in life and try and find work.
