A British cyclist has been ordered to stay off his bike for a few days after going emergency dental treatment.

Doctors in Majorca told Mark Cavendish to rest after he had to have a painful tooth abscess drained.

Reports suggest that the procedure to draw off an infection was a success and Cavendish is said to be recovering on anti-biotics in the HTC-Columba hotel.

He had complained of severe jaw pain since he returned from a three-week Christmas holiday in Paraguay.

Mere hours before he was rushed to hospital the cyclist spoke to the media ahead of the launch of the 2010 season. He revealed that he is aiming to get the green jersey at the tour to France.

Cavendish won six stages during the 2009 Tour.
