A huge £15 Million injection will see five new dentist practices opened in Bristol meaning thousands can now receive treatment.
The cash provided to NHS Bristol will ease the pressure on the 205 dentists that are currently practicing in the 64 surgeries in the city.
The movement comes as the need for dental services in Bristol’s deprived areas continues to grow, in particular in parts where there is little or no cover at all.
The lack of cover in Bristol has also been as a result in many practices taking on private work leaving little space and time for NHS treatment.
The new practices in Bristol are said to enable a huge number of residents to have access to an NHS dentist, with a projected 50,000 potential patients having a greater chance of treatment.
From early Autumn early services are available as planning work on the new practices has already begun, patients can start making appointments in the five surgeries in April next year.
Deborah Evans, NHS Bristol Chief Executive, said: “NHS Bristol aims to provide dental services where they are needed – regardless of where you live – and this is what we are doing.
“These five new surgeries will make it easier for more people across Bristol to see an NHS dentist.”
The development comes after a detailed analysis in 2007 highlighted the areas of the city where NHS access was most difficult; the new plans will ensure that over 70% of Bristol will have access to an NHS dentist.
