A retired orthodontist has donated $4million to East Carolina University.

Dr Ledyard Ross, 84, donated the substantial sum to the university to help it build a new dental school.

The university’s trustees voted to name the building after Dr Ross to say thank you for his remarkable gift.

Steve Ballard, university chancellor, said that the donation had been made at a vital time for the university as the new school will be admitting its first students in 2011.

The $4million donation is one of the largest ever received by the university.
