Canadian Dental Surgeon takes on Mentoring Role in Afghanistan

A dental surgeon from Canada has taken on a new role mentoring troops in Afghanistan.

Captain Luong Phuc Nguyen of the 4 Royal 22nd Regiment has downed his scalpels to embark on an important new challenge in the Kandahari desert.

Captain Nguyen admits that it is a bold move and said that many people have questioned the swap. At home in Canada, Capt. Nguyen has a successful career and a comfortable lifestyle and many would not have been brave enough to give that all up to help the troops in the searing heat of the desert.

Captain Nguyen said that his parents have found it difficult to understand why he has interrupted his career to risk his life in another country; however, he says that they understand his patriotism and determination to help others.

Nguyen said that it would have been logical to take on a role as a dentist or dental surgeon, however, this was never his plan and he was desperate to get out and meet the Afghan people and take on a more interactive role.
