Can Celebrity Grills Damage The Teeth?

Sample News Big

In recent years, the dental grill has become incredibly popular, with a host of celebrities showing off their customised smiles. Initially, the trend became big news among rappers but recently, actresses and singers have got in on the act and grills are the latest fashion accessory.

A grill is a piece of decorative mouth wear, which is usually adorned with diamonds, jewels and coloured gems. In the past few weeks, Beyonce, Madonna and Miley Cyrus have all posted photos of themselves flashing new grills. However dentists are worried that the trend could contribute to dental problems, as people try to mimic their celebrity icons.

Celebrities have the money to invest in well-made grills, which are made from high quality materials. However, members of the public, who may not be able to afford the same standard of grill, could be putting their oral health at risk by paying for imitation versions.

Dr Lance Knight, a Bupa dentist, said that many celebrities wear clip-on grills. He said these are safe for the teeth and act as more permanent fixtures, which are made from good quality materials and fit inside the mouth well.

Well-fitted grills should not cause problems but cheaper versions, which haven’t been fitted by a professional dentist, could cause dental health issues. Potential problems include severe gum disease and dental decay, which could lead to a patient needing other treatments.

Root canal therapy, reconstructive dental treatment and dental crowns are only a few of the potential restorative treatments that may be required.

The advice from dentists to anyone considering a dental grill is to choose a clip-on or invest in a professionally-made, high quality grill.
