Brush DJ App Helps Children Keep Their Teeth Healthy

The British Dental Journal has published research that proves the efficacy of an app aiming to help children to maintain a good oral healthcare routine.

Originally launched in 2011, Brush DJ was accepted into the NHS Choices Health Apps Library in 2013. The app is free and by February this year had been downloaded on more than 197,000 devices across 188 countries.

The app plays two minutes of music, as two minutes is the recommended time for brushing your teeth. The music is taken either randomly or from a playlist on the user’s device. Not only does it encourage youngsters to brush for the optimum time, Brush DJ also sets reminders so they know to brush twice a day, use mouthwash, visit the dentist and change toothbrushes every three months.

Research for the British Dental Journal was conducted by a team made up of a lead dental researcher from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, a consultant orthodontist from Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust and a general dental practitioner and NHS Innovation Accelerator Fellow from York.

The results revealed that 70% of respondents experienced cleaner feeling teeth after using Brush DJ and 88% said the app made them feel motivated to brush for longer. 90% said they would recommend it to family and friends.

The team concluded that as well as contributing to more motivation for children to take care of their teeth effectively, Brush DJ also has major potential as a means of conveying important information about oral health.
