Brits Heading Abroad to Save Money on Dental Work

More and more Brits are heading overseas to save money on dental work.

Figures suggest that around 100,000 people have decided to go to Eastern Europe for treatment, as costs are sometimes less than half of those quoted in the UK. According to consumer group, Which? costs are considerably lower than the UK, with a crown costing up to £520 in the UK, compared to just £190 in Poland.

The Office of Fair Trading is investigating why dental prices are so high in the UK, as their costs are among the highest in Europe, which has triggered the growth of dental tourism.

Cassie Crowhurst, a marketing assistant from Kent, went to Bratislava to have six new crowns fitted, after being quoted a price of £900 per tooth in England. After doing some research online, Cassie found a clinic in Slovakia and had her treatment done for £300 per tooth.

Peter Kolman, the owner of dental tour company, Dentist in Poland, said that there has been a steady rise in the number of people travelling to Poland for treatment since the company was launched five years ago.

The British Dental Association has urged patients to be cautious about travelling abroad for treatment, after a poll revealed that 29 percent of dentists in England have treated patients as a result of complications following treatment abroad.
